SECTION A

  1. Read the following passage and answer the questions in your own words.

The relationship between the individual and society is both complex and essential. Society plays a significant role in shaping an individual’s thoughts, actions, values, and identity. From the moment we are born, we are socialized into a web of relationships that teach us how to behave, what to believe, and how to perceive the world. Institutions such as family, school, religious groups, peer circles, and media all contribute to this socialization process. However, the influence is not one-sided. While society moulds the individual, the individual also contributes to society’s evolution. When people question social norms, propose reforms, or introduce new ideas, they help reshape the collective conscience of a community. For example, individuals who fought against colonial rule, social discrimination, or environmental destruction have played a major role in transforming societies. Social norms and values provide a framework within which individuals act. They offer a sense of order and belonging. At the same time, these norms can become restrictive, especially when they limit freedom, creativity, or equality. In such cases, individuals may feel the need to resist or reform these norms. When a young person speaks up against gender stereotypes or challenges caste-based discrimination, they are not only asserting their individuality but also pushing society toward inclusiveness and justice. The balance between individual freedom and social responsibility is crucial. A society that suppresses personal expression becomes rigid and unjust. On the other hand, individuals who ignore social responsibilities can create disorder or harm the collective well-being. Hence, the ideal scenario is one where individuals enjoy the freedom to think, express, and grow, while also understanding their duty toward social harmony, justice, and mutual respect. In this dynamic interaction, both the individual and society benefit. The individual finds purpose and belonging, while the society grows through the diverse contributions of its members. Understanding this mutual relationship is key to building a world that is both free and fair.
